5) Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl They say a picture sais more then a thousand words, so here you go: Not convinced yet? What if I told you that the director is Yoshihiro Nishimura? I thought so.
4) Rampage An uwe boll movie that isn't a terrible movie. Definitely the biggest surprise of 2010.
3) Rubber No this is not a PSA for safe sex, its a strange french horror comedy that had me loughing out load several times during some of the weirdest moments I have seen on film. More an arthouse comedy then a real exploitation picture, but I still like to put it in the list (it is my list after all). Seen this on a filmfestival, and glad I did cause it doesn't get shown a lot around here.
2) Piranha 3D Christopher Lloyd singlehandedly makes this a must watch movie. Besides him there is blood, guts, nudity, humor and lovely winks to the other piranha/killer shark movies. This movie is not for everyone. If you don't like gore, naked women or killer animal movies, you're best bet is to stay away.
1) Machete I loved this false trailer that was shown for Grindhouse. I was heavily expecting the movie when I first heart about the news. Especially since they got everyone from the trailer to play their part. The movie itself turned out to be a little les action oriented than the first trailer, but it is still a must see, giving new popularity to grindhouse flix.
Note: I haven't seen all movies released this year, only movies that where released over here in 2010 count. 5) Zot van A. (2010) There are a few romantic comedies that I like, this is not one of them. It's not funny, has a predictable plot and some of the more weaker acting I have seen in a big budget movie. I'm sure there were worse romantic comedies out this year, but lucky I wasn't forced to watch those.
4) Tekken (2010) A video game movie is almost never good news, and the same holds true for this crappy action movie. Didn't have high hopes for it so it wasn't a real disappointment. On a positive note it is still better then Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li released in 2009.
3) The Other Guys (2010) Will Ferrell how low have you sunk. This movie is a comedy with one little problem, it's not funny. It would have worked if they removed the beginning and middle part and changed it into something good. Then only the ending would have sucked.
2) Get Lamp (2010) I like text adventures games, so it would be normal to assume that a documentary about text adventures games would be an interesting watch for me, but you would be wrong. This movie is aimed at nobody but the maker himself. I can't find a single redeeming feature in this documentary, they hardly even mention the games. This is just a boring movie, especially if you like to be entertained.
1) 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams (2010) I like the original movie by Gordon lewis, I kinda enjoyed the remake for what it's worth. I hate the sequels to the remake. It diminishes the other movies, it doesn't make sense, and it just a big, stinking pile of crap. This time the cannibal village is on the road with a circus show. Murdering some stereotypes. Sure there are some good gory scenes, but they are not really enjoyable this time around.
Sorry for the lack of updates. I might blow some new life in the site after all. But today I present the first of my top 10 lists of 2010. Note: I haven't seen all movies released this year, only movies that where released over here in 2010 count.
10) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
I loved the comic, I'm not the biggest connoisseur of comic books but this one hold my interest. And I was very glad to see that the movie did everything right, a very faithful adaptation that is more style over substance.
9) Robin Hood (2010) A dark and gritty reboot of Robin Hood. Just what the character needed.
8) Black Dynamite (2009) Black Dynamite is to blaxploitation what Austin Powers is to those gazillion British spy-thrillers from the 60s. Absolutely hilarious, this will be one of my most quoted movies of all time. I have seen this in the beginning of 2010. After a rewatch I might need to put it higher on the list.
7) American Grindhouse (2010) My second favorite documentary of the year. This is not just a list of the most famous exploitation movies, o no this looks at the very beginning of grindhouse movies, what inspired them, how they came to be, from the beginning of cinema to the present day. Even exploitation buffs will find something new in here, and if not will have a good time anyway. I saw the movie on a local film festival and it was the best decision of the year. Interviews with Fred Williamson, Fred Olen Ray, Joe Dante, Herschell Gordon Lewis and Bob Minor. if that doesn't want you to watch this movie, maybe the trailer will:
6) Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) Jep, a straight to dvd animated features hold the number 6 spot. This will probably be a surprise but this is a very well done movie. The animation is good (not great) but the story is tense, the joker is more of a bad ass then ever before and the music fits the story. A must see.
5) Best Worst Movie (2009) If you are like me you love troll 2. If you love troll 2 you will love this documentary about it. Some of the highlight include George Hardy repeating the you can't piss on hospitality line to everybody who he needs to examines (he is a popular dentist now) and the director of troll 2 Claudio Fragasso, who doesn't realize why troll 2 is now a cult phenomena. He blames the actors for not knowing how to act. The best documentary of the year, and it owns it all to the always sympathetic George Hardy.
4) The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009) Every movie list needs Nicolas Cage. Thats just a fact. Every good movie list needs him twice, this is the first. Cage plays a bad cop, and after you have seen the flick you don't want him to play anything else ever again. He was born for this role. Best drug infused day dreams I have seen in a long time.
3) Shutter Island (2010) Probably the movie I looked most forward to this year, and it did not disappoint. Eventhough I liked gangs of new york, I didn't think of Leonardo DiCaprio as a good actor. That is until this new Martin Scorsese masterpiece. This movie slowly builds op a haunting atmosphere, constantly making the audience doubt about what is reality, all cumulating in one great finale. A must see!
2) Kick-Ass (2010) Remember how I mentioned that every list needs a Nicolas Cage movie? Well this is my second one. Remember how I said that you don't want to see him play anything else but a bad cop? Well I lied, you also want to see him as a batman knockoff who uses extreme violence to take revenge on the bad guys. The graphic novel this is based on is the stronger work because it implements an incredible plot twist at the end. But even without this the movie is funny, violent and bloody.
1) Inception (2010)
Not my favorite Christopher Nolan movie, but still the best cinema experience I had this year. It is a very imaginative movie with strong performances and a story that excels at making you think while watching it. Sure it might be a little overhyped but that should not be an excuse to trash the movie. Well deserved first spot.
Runner-ups: Up in the air, A serious Man, Planet Hulk.
Haven't seen: The Town, Toy Story 3, How To Train Your Dragon, Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus and many more.
Today I bring you the first movie of the Milieu Trilog which gave us three of the best movies of the whole eurocrime genre. Directed by Fernando Di Leo , loved by many yet unknown to the masses.
The movie starts extremely well with one of the best pre-opening credit scenes out there. We get a small introduction to some characters and a bit of the plot with an intense atmosphre will listening to a progressive rock song. This scene leaves you with a lot of questions but also leaves you wanting more, a lot more. After the opening credits we get introduced to Ugo Piazza, played brilliantly by Gastone Moschin, who just got released from prison thanks to good behavior. He was safer in prison because his former employer, Rocco, a psychopathic gangster and the police all believe he stole $300,000 during his last assignment before he went into prison and that he chose to go to jail to protect himself and to later benefit from his hidden money. The $300,000 belonged to an American drug boss who does not like people stealing from him and who gives poor Ugo more then a hard time. Of course not everything is like it seams and many plot twists occur.
The movie also contains an interesting subplot about two cops constantly arguing about rich vs poor people committing crime and what the best way is to deal with it. An interesting look in the Di Leo's politics.
The technical side of the movie is great with beautiful shots of Milan mixed with well made sets. The performances are excellent with an exception for some of the real small parts. The movies thrives with a mix of close up shots of peoples faces and some excellent scenes of packages being passed around in public areas. Those scenes have no dialog but more of the marvelous soundtrack. This soundtrack is a mix between progressive rock and more traditional funky 70's Italian crime music.
This movie is an excellent introduction to the genre and is recommended to any movie fan willing to give it a shot.
Sorry for the lack of updates. I will try to update more in the future, if you have any questions please read the FAQ.
This time I review a bmovie with a great premise.
The premise: Werewolves on motercycles.
That is all you get and indeed all you should want from any movie.
The story:
Here is how the script must have been:
Gang is driving through the dessert.
-They do something cool like driving on the wrong lane (WHAT A BADASS GANG)
Gang is driving through the dessert.
-They steal some gasoline (BADASS RIGHT?)
Gang is driving through the dessert.
-They are sleeping
Gang is driving through the dessert.
-they encounter a random satanic gang who try to sacrifice one of the female bikers. Our cool gang give them a good beating but they get cursed in the process.
Gang is driving through the dessert.
-Two of them kill each other
Gang is driving through the dessert.
- they are all spooked
Gang is driving through the dessert.
- STILL NO FUCKING WEREWOLF IN THIS MOVIE (60 minutes in)
Gang is driving through the dessert.
-a fistfight
Gang is driving through the dessert.
They are such badasses. You know you don't want to mess with them.
At this point one of the crew members must have noticed that their weren't any werewolves to be found yet
so in the last quarter or so finally we see some werewolves (who indeed ride on a motorcycle for like 5 seconds).
They quickly get killed by the rest of the gang ending this disappointing movie.
Guys this is no time to sleep, people where murdered just now.
I can't believe they messed this up, all they needed to do was have a gang of werewolves ride on motorcycles and do shenanigans like plunder towns, pillaging it and raping the girls.
Now that would be a movie that is totally the opposite of this one (meaning not completely boring).
Warning these screens make the flick seem better then it is.
If you enjoy bad cinema that is so bad it remains bad, or you just don't like entertainment please search for this dvd. Otherwise just chuckle at the name of this movie and move on, their are so many better drive in movies then this one.
Score: 1/10
Ps: listen to the commentary on the dvd, sound like they had a better time filming it then we have watching it.
As promised another review from a movie pack. This time the honor goes to another Roger Corman movie, the king of bee movies (lame pun), The Wasp Woman also know as The Bee Girl from Sci-Fi Classics 50 Movie Pack. While this movie also got a remake it is a lot less popular then little shop of horrors (read my review).
Janice Starlin, played by Susan Cabot whom we know from euh virtually nothing, is the owner of a large international cosmetic company. Not only the owner but also the face of the company and its marketing campain, but when sales starts to drop she has to admit that it is because she is getting old.
What do you mean I'm getting ugly?
She lost her good looks and well thats all that matters in a woman (at least back than). Luckly we are introduced to our mad scientist Dr. Eric Zinthrop, played by Michael Mark from from Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe), who isn't all that mad this time around (what a twist!). He found a way to reverse the aging process by extracting enzymes from the royal jelly of wasp queens. After receiving a letter from him Janice contacts him, desperate that she is to try anything. Dr. Eric Zinthrop performs his magic and makes an old guinea pig into a young white rat (I guess they didn't have to budget to get a young guinea pig?). Starlin agrees to pay for his reseach on one condition, that she can serve as a human subject. And what do you know, it works, day after day miss Starlin gets younger, and like all young people she has no patience anymore. So instead of listening to the advice of Zinthrop she breaks into his office and gets herself extra doses of the potion.
The guard looks like a mix between Hardy and Indiana Jones.
Now Zinthrop himself has noticed some strange things with his other non-human test creatures and goes out to warn her in person, when what do you know he gets run over by a car! After a lot of trouble Janice manges to find him and is able to take care of him herself by letting him recover in her own company. Janice continues to excessively use the potions that Zinthrop made, and in just a single weekend she has gotten about twenty years younger but there are some nasty side-effects she turns into a murderous queen wasp (actually just herself with a wasp mask and a black sweater).
Look at my all young and beautiful again.
Our lovely killer were-wasp kills 3 people before Zinthrop (who only just got better) kills here with acid (the exact same thing I use to kill bees and wasps around the house).
Looks legit
And thus ends this parable with the message that you have to be glad with what you have instead of turning into a killer wasp queen (or something like that).
It's obvious that Corman was inspired by the success that "The Fly" has gotten not long before this one. Not only does somebody also transform into an insect, take a loot at the movie poster, the "monster" looks nothing like this (quite the opposite actually with a wasp head and a human body). Maybe they first wanted to get the monster like this but the extreme low budget (It's a Corman film what did you expect) made them change their minds.
No! I'm allergic.
The bad costume is really a shame, especially if you compare it with the fly and the production is quite underwhelming. Not only that but it takes a long time before we see the monster and things start to get more interesting. If it wasn't for the low budget I am sure this movie would be one of the more memorable flicks, the story is quite original, the scientist does not force his guinea pig but it's the other way around. It's the woman who is to greedy to return to her former beauty that thrives the plot, and if you think about it, it is our society itself that makes our protagonist into our antagonist.
All in all a fun movie to watch, but it could be so much more.
Score: 6.5/10
Note: I haven't seen the remake yet but I ought to check it out.
Again the print on the sci-fi box is the same that can be found online and is quite bad. It is way to dark, making it sometimes very difficult to follow the more action based scenes. It's a shame but it is nothing less than I expected.
